Who is the mascot for the San Diego Padres?
The Swinging Friar is the official mascot for the San Diego Padres in Major League Baseball (MLB) as per the MLB official site. He has been described as cartoonish, balding, pudgy and always smiling. He is a friar with a tonsure, a dark hooded cloak, a rope around his waist and sandals. He is known to swing a baseball bat, but on some days, he swings right-handed, while on other days, he swings left-handed. He has also been described as either a switch hitter or ambidextrous. He was created by Carlos Hadaway, a 19-year-old graduate from San Diego High.
The Swinging Friar’s History
There is an interesting reason behind the San Diego Padres choosing a friar as the team’s mascot. The Spanish Franciscan Friars established the Mission San Diego de Alcala. They also established the city of San Diego around it, in 1769 and also made significant contributions to develop the city. This led the team to choose their mascot as per Sportsmascots.
Although Carlos Hadaway received payment from the team for creating the mascot, he stated that he did not do it for financial reasons but for the fans of the San Diego Padres. The Swinging Friar had been a part of the team since the 1950’s even before the team began to play in the MLB. He has been a part of the team emblem since 1984. After a decade, he returned as a patch on the alternate jersey slaves for the team.
Initially, the Swinging Friar was presented as a real-life man in a friar’s clothes. However, he was later changed into a costumed character. Since his introduction, the Swinging Friar has been an important part of the San Diego Padres family. He always waves the team flag and rings the game bell called the Mission Bell. If the San Diego Padres win in a game, the Swinging Friars rings the bell thrice. Moreover, if the home games of the team fall on Sundays, then he wears a special military camo uniform as a tribute to the rich military history of San Diego.
Besides these, the Swinging Friar also appears at various civic and charity events for the team as part of the outreach program of the San Diego Padres. He is one of the most loved mascots in Major League Baseball (MLB). He also has his account on X.
