The team derived its name from the former Pacific Coast League (PCL) team in 1936 and was formed in 1969 as one of the expansion teams in the league. The San Diego Padres have been a member of the National League (NL) and a representative of the NL West Division since their formation.

The San Diego Padres ranked #3 in the NL West Division in the 2023 MLB season with a record of 82-80-0. They chose Gary Sanchez as their #1 batter for his 46 home runs and Blake Snell as their #1 pitcher for his 234 strikeouts in the season.
