Not too long ago, Sandy Alcantara was widely considered one of the best pitchers in baseball. The Miami Marlins superstar was incredible in 2022 en route to winning the National League Cy Young Award. After an underwhelming 2023 season which ended with Tommy John surgery, Alcantara's prime seems relatively shortlived.
Alcantara is only 29 years old, however, he is coming off major surgery on his throwing elbow and we have yet to see how he will bounce back from the procedure. This has led to some believing that the Miami Marlins could look to trade him sooner rather than later.
Alcantara can remain under team control until the end of the 2027 season, which could help his value among interested teams. The fact that the former All-Star would not be considered a rental makes him a more intriguing target for clubs on the trade market. President of Baseball Operations, Peter Bendix, said that the team remains open to offers even though they are not actively shopping him to clubs.
Here's a closer look at 3 potential landing spots for Sandy Alcantara on the trade market
#1 - Baltimore Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles might be a perfect fit for Alcantara for several reasons. After losing Corbin Burnes in free agency, the O's are in the market for a true ace, which Alcantara would be. Baltimore is also poised to be a contender for some seasons, which could allow Sandy to compete for a title.
The Orioles have many prized young players who could be key pieces of any potential trade between the two teams. Players such as Heston Kjerstad or Coby Mayo could be the right kind of prospect that could tempt the Miami Marlins into moving their ace.
#2 - San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants are another team that has been aggressively trying to improve their pitching rotation. Alcantara could form one of the best pitching duos in the league with Logan Webb. The Giants missed out on Corbin Burnes in free agency and star Blake Snell moved on this offseason as well. San Francisco could tempt the Marlins with some of their young talent to get a deal done.
#3 - Atlanta Braves
It may not be fair, but the Atlanta Braves could be poised to land a superstar like Sandy Alcantara. The Braves will enter the 2025 season as legitimate World Series contenders in the National League and could form one of the best rotations in baseball if they were to land Alcantara.
The Braves are in the middle of a championship window, which could motivate them to move on from some of their top prospects to help that cause. If Atlanta's front office could put Sandy Alcantara next to Chris Sale, Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach and Reynaldo Lopez, they might be unstoppable.
