American pitcher Shane Bieber was born on May 31, 1995, and now plays for the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball. As a walk-on, he participated in collegiate baseball with the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. He earned a scholarship as a sophomore and later went on to play in collegiate summer baseball in the west coast league with the Cowlitz Black Bears. The following season he went on to play in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Yarmouth- Dennis Red Sox. Seeing his massive potential and talent the Cleveland Guardians selected him in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2016. He made his professional debut with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, where he spent the whole season.
On May 31, 2018, the Guardians acquired Bieber's contract and brought him into their active roster. That evening at Target Field, he made his major league debut as the starting pitcher against the Minnesota Twins. The Guardians defeated Minnesota 9–8, as he threw 5.2 innings, giving up four runs (all earned) and eight hits, walking none and striking out six. With an 11–5 record, 4.55 ERA, and 118 strikeouts in 20 games, Bieber concluded his rookie season. By signing a one-year, $10.01 million deal with the Guardians for the 2023 season on January 13, 2023, Bieber avoided going through salary arbitration. Due to elbow discomfort, Bieber was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 15. On July 24, he was moved to the 60-day disabled list. After being reinstated from the disabled list on September 22, Bieber started that day's game against the Baltimore Orioles.
