Jared Michael Schumaker, also known as “Skip” served as the former manager of the Miami Marlins in Major League Baseball (MLB) as of November 2024. Starting his career as a baseball player, he attended Aliso Niguel High School in Aliso Viejo, California, and then went to the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he played college baseball. Notably, the St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in 2001 and made his team debut in 2005. His MLB career spanned from 2005 to 2016 with teams like the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, and San Diego Padres (minor leagues only). Remarkably, also also earned two MLB World Series rings during his playing career.

After Skip Schumaker retired in 2016, he spent the years between 2017 and 2022 with the San Diego Padres, first as their first base coach and then as their associate manager. He was also the bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals for the 2022 season. Moving forward, Schumaker began his journey as a manager for the first time when he was chosen by the Miami Marlins for the same in 2023. His first year saw him become NL Manager of the Year in 2023. He eventually left the team a little before the 2024 MLB ended, while announcing that he will not be back in 2025. He achieved a record of 146-178 in his career as a manager.

The late Wayne Schumaker was the father of Skip Schumaker. He was notable for having a loyal and fiery personality. He was a football, basketball, and hockey player as per the MLB official site. He also worked as the Los Angeles County chief of beaches and harbors safety and sanitation. Despite not having a baseball background, he fully supported his son’s interest in the game. As a result, he started watching MLB games and memorized the drills so that he could coach his son’s baseball teams from 5 years to 12 years of age at the Torrance American Baseball League. He even built a mechanism in their garage wall for his son to hit when it was raining outside.

The late Wayne Schumaker would often exchange his work shifts with his colleagues so that he could be present during his son’s games. Unfortunately, Wayne Schumaker passed away on March 19, 2024, at the age of 72 due to congestive heart failure. Talking about his late father (via mlb.com), Skip Schumaker stated that he inherited his late father’s work ethic and fiery and loyal personality. For the 2024 season, he switched his jersey from #55 to #45 as a tribute to his father because #45 was his father’s jersey number when he was in high school as per the MLB official site.

Marlene Schumaker is notable for being the mother of Skip Schumaker. She, alongside her late husband Wane Schumaker, had recognized their son’s potential to be a future team manager based on a discussion she had with her son after one of his high school games.
