The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran right-hander Charlie Morton to a one-year, $15 million contract, MLB.com reported.
With the signing, the Orioles addressed a hole in their starting rotation following the departure of Corbin Burnes in free agency.
Despite the solid acquisition, some fans weren’t overly thrilled with the deal.
Here’s a closer look at what some fans on Instagram had to say about Morton’s new contract with the O’s:
“Bro is 40 and got 15m for a year, someone sign Bauer,” a fan chimed in.
“Verlander would be a better fit,” another fan chimed in.
“This is yalls Corbin Burnes apology?” this weighed in.
However, not all fans criticized the move. Some fans were supportive of the Orioles’ decision to add the veteran starter.
Here are some reactions from fans on X/Twitter:
“The Orioles are really going for it in 2025,” a fan opined.
“Cubs could have used him. Morton has had a great and steady career year after year,” another fan remarked.
“This is a great signing for them,” another fan commented.
Morton will likely land on the back end of the O’s rotation. So, it’s reasonable to assume that Baltimore will be in the market for another starting pitcher to round out the front of their rotation.
It remains to be seen what other moves the Orioles make, considering that the top free-agent names are off the board by now.
Several suitors for Orioles' free agent slugger
The Baltimore Orioles have already lost one high-profile free agent this offseason when Corbin Burnes signed a massive deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
However, the other big-ticket free agent leaving Baltimore is Anthony Santander. The right fielder has reportedly attracted a number of suitors.
According to Sports Illustrated, as many as six teams are looking to add the power-hitting outfielder. Among them, the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, but more notably, the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels are reportedly pursuing Santander this offseason.
The likelihood of Santander leaving the O's became even more evident when the club signed former St. Louis Cardinals player Tyler O’Neill to a three-year, $49.5 million deal. O’Neill could take over Santander’s sport in right field while making up for the pop lost in Santander’s departure.
While there’s no ruling out that Santander could return to the O’s in 2025, the ship appears to have sailed. So, it remains to be seen which team emerges as the top suitor for the former Baltimore star.
Last season, Santander walloped 44 dingers and drove in 102 runs, earning him an All-Star appearance and a Silver Slugger nod.
