The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a 10-2 defeat to the San Diego Padres on Sunday in Game 2 of their best-of-five NLDS. The game featured a controversial moment that got the MLB universe talking.
During warmups before the bottom of the sixth inning, Padres third baseman Manny Machado threw a ball toward the Dodgers’ dugout. LA criticized Machado, suggesting the ball was directed toward manager Dave Roberts. Roberts called the action ‘unsettling’ and ‘disrespectful.’
The incident has garnered several reactions, including one from former baseball shortstop Alex Rodriguez. On Tuesday's episode of FOX Sports: MLB with host Kevin Burkhardt, Rodriguez and several other former players, including Derek Jeter, David Ortiz, and Dontrelle Willis, discussed the incident:
“This is good guys vs bad boys," Rodriguez said. "And in the early '90s, we had Detroit Pistons who were the bad guys and they enjoyed it. I think the Padres are the same way. They really enjoy being the bad boys. But remember for the Dodgers the one hesitation is don’t go for the head fake. They want to pull you in the mud. They feel very comfortable in the mud.”
Discussing the incident, David Ortiz said:
“I don’t want to speak on behalf of Manny because I don’t know what the intention was behind that. But the last guy you want to hit, you want to throw a baseball at is Dave Roberts in my mind. Dave Roberts is a very lovely person we all love. I think the misunderstanding coming from Manchado was he responded back… I think the intensity of game everything that is going on makes it even worse.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts discusses Manny Machado’s throw at the dugout
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed that he didn’t see the ball thrown by Manny Machado at first, but noticed it later in a video. Discussing whether it was intentional, he said (via Jack Harris of the LA Times):
“There was intent behind it. It didn’t almost hit me because there was a net. And that was very bothersome. If it was intended at me, I would be very — it’s pretty disrespectful… I don’t know his intent. I don’t want to speak for him. But I did see the video. And the ball was directed at me with something behind it.”
The Dodgers are in Game 3 of their NLDS against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. At the time of writing, the Padres lead 6-5.
