Freddie Freeman's wife, Chelsea, once opened up about the heartbreak she experienced during their struggle to conceive. She described it as "too painful," especially as many of her friends were getting pregnant at the same time, which made the journey even more challenging.

Freeman and Chelsea’s path to parenthood has been far from ordinary. After she had to undergo an emergency C-section with their first son, Charlie, in 2016, they faced the heartbreak of infertility.

Despite multiple medical hurdles, the couple’s determination led them to pursue surrogacy, which resulted in the birth of their second son, Brandon, in December 2020. To their surprise, Chelsea soon became pregnant naturally and gave birth to their third son, Maximus, in February 2021.

In a 2021 interview with ESPN, Chelsea Freeman talked about their journey to starting a family. When their efforts to conceive didn’t work out, the couple decided to turn to a surrogate mother whose details they have kept private to this day.

"I thought, 'You know, this time it'll be the same.' I had a couple of girlfriends and we were all trying at the same time. Slowly, they got pregnant and I didn't. That was a tough time for us," she said.
"It was too painful to even talk about at that point. So eventually, after it'd been like a year and a half, I was like, 'We need to come up with a plan,'" she added.

Freddie Freeman's wife continued:

"The hardest part about going through infertility is the emotion. You are so drained, because you don't know why -- like, 'Why isn't it happening? How is this part of God's plan?' You think about those things."

In the same 2021 ESPN interview, Freddie Freeman also touched on their pregnancy. He said that after years of trying when doctors suggested surrogacy, he and Chelsea eagerly embraced the option, as having a large family was something they both were looking forward to.

"Every pregnancy and fertility journey is a little bit different for everyone, and we wanted to respect our surrogate's privacy, as well. I think it's an inspirational story that we have," he said.

The Dodgers star added:

"We tried for a couple of years, and it didn't happen. We were talking with doctors, and they suggested surrogacy. We jumped at that, because we wanted to be blessed with more kids."

Although Freeman and Chelsea successfully grew their family to five, their struggles didn’t end there. In 2024, their youngest son, Maximus, was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological condition that caused him to lose full-body mobility.

Despite the challenges, Maximus has shown remarkable strength, facing his condition with courage. In August, the Freemans shared some encouraging news, noting that while there’s no set timeline for his full recovery, their son has made progress.
