All England Club, or more popularly known as Wimbledon, in London may be far from Francisco Lindor's home town of Caguas in Puerto Rico. However, the avid tennis fan recently arranged a private tour of one of the most esteemed tennis locations in the world, and made an interesting observation.
Last week, Lindor was in the British capital with his team, the New York Mets, to take on the Phillies in the MLB London Series. While he was there primarily to clash against a divisional foe at London Stadium, the shortstop also took some time to sightsee.
A known tennis fan who has attended various American tennis tournaments such as the US Open, Lindor arranged a private tour of Wimbledon in south London. Upon seeing the Centre Court, where the 2024 Wimbledon Championships will kick off in less than a month, Lindor made an observation:
"It's beautiful. ... It's definitely special, if I was a tennis player, I would definitely want to be here. This looks like Fenway Park"
Referencing the green color scheme of Wimbledon's 18 tournament grass courts, Francisco Lindor made a comparison to Fenway Park, the esteemed home of the Boston Red Sox. Both venues are regarded as storied and are aesthetically heralded in their respective sports.
In addition to seeing the grounds of the Wimbledon Tennis Club, Lindor also got the opportunity to visit a exhibit dedicated to American tennis star Coco Gauff. According to MLB.com, Lindor is a big fan of Gauff, claiming of the 20-year-old star that the "world is going to be hers."
"Francisco Lindor joins I.T. to discuss the #LondonSeries plans for his hair, walk-up songs and more! @Lindor12BC @Mets" - Intentional Talk
Lindor went 2-for-9 with a double and a pair of strikeouts as the Mets split their series in London with the Philadelphia Phillies. Lindor, 30, is the hottest player on the team as they return to the United States. Over his past 12 contests, the Puerto Rican has hit .340/.400/.580 with three home runs and seven RBIs.
Francisco Lindor enjoyed Wimbledon outing despite claiming "too much" time off in London
Both the Phillies and New York Mets arrived in London on Thursday for the two-game weekend series. While Lindor seems to have filled his time industriously, that did not mean that he wanted two full days off. After his team's 6-5 win on Sunday, the former All-Star claimed:
“I feel like we had too much time off, I get it, there’s a process of you’ve got to sell the games and stuff like that. But to me ... playing the next day (Friday) would have been a little bit more beneficial.”
While two days off following a trans-Atlantic flight may not be easiest thing to do, at least Francisco Lindor used the time to delve further into his own interests.
