MLB starting pitchers are tasked with recording outs, and they frequently get strikeouts to do so. Every starter usually has a few strikeouts each time they're out on the mound, but the total at the end of the day can and does vary wildly.
Predicting how many they end up with concerning an over/under line is challenging. To that end, we've got the best bets from DraftKings for Friday's matchups. Three of the five picks we made yesterday hit.
Best MLB strikeout prop bets for August 23
5) Carlos Rodon: Under 8.5 -145
Carlos Rodon has had an up-and-down season for the New York Yankees, and he's been decent in the strikeout department. Since he gets the Colorado Rockies outside of Coors Field, he has a good matchup, but the over/under line is incredibly high. Take the under.
4) Chris Sale: Over 7.5 -125
Generally speaking, Chris Sale is almost always good to hit the over. The Atlanta Braves star has an astonishing 33.6% strikeout rate and an 11.96 K/9. He gets the Washington Nationals today, so look for him to mow down the hitters that step into the box.
3) Hyden Birdsong: Under 5.5 -140
Hayden Birdsong has a 27.5% K rate for the San Francisco Giants, which lends itself to his strong 10.67 K/9. However, despite the rookie pitcher facing the most strikeout-heavy team in baseball (the Seattle Mariners), the odds are not strong for him to get over 5.5.
2) Bobby Miller: Under 5.5 -160 (Safest Pick of the Day)
The safest pick of the day is Bobby Miller. The Los Angeles Dodgers starter has been abysmal this year, and that includes a meager 18.1% K rate and a disappointing 7.49 K/9 mark. Take the under on him no matter who he's facing.
1) Hunter Brown: Over 5.5 -110 (Bold Prediction of the Day)
Today's bold prediction is for Hunter Brown, who has a solid 25.5% K rate and averages a little over one strikeout per inning pitched. His odds aren't great against the vaunted Baltimore Orioles, but that's why he's a bold pick for today. Take the over.
