MLB starting pitchers go out to record outs, and the best way to do that is via strikeouts. Anything else involves a lot of other players and things can and often do go wrong. Striking out a lot of batters usually means a pitcher had a good day and can also mean a good payday for those who take the over on the prop bet. With that in mind, here are today's best picks from DraftKings:
Best MLB strikeout prop bets for August 8
#5) Kevin Gausman: Over 5.5 -120
Kevin Gausman has had a bit of a disappointing season, and he's striking out just 22.4% of batters this year. He's not averaging even one strikeout per inning, either. He also faces the Baltimore Orioles, a tough opponent indeed. Despite all that, the odds are stronger that he will get to six strikeouts today so take the over.
#4) Shane Baz: Under 4.5 -145
Shane Baz has had a decent year so far and in five starts, he's been solid, though only striking out 22.2% of batters (8.64 per nine innings). That doesn't bode well for the Tampa Bay Rays starter today, and the odds are strong that he won't even reach five strikeouts against the St. Louis Cardinals.
#3) Nestor Cortes: Under 5.5 -130
The same issue plagues Nestor Cortes, though he's been quite solid for the New York Yankees. He just isn't racking up strikeouts (22.7% K rate and 8.47 per nine innings), and even though he faces the Los Angeles Angels, it is a risk to trust him today.
#2) Charlie Morton: Over 5.5 -135
Charlie Morton has been average most of the year, which includes a strikeout rate of 23.3%, right around the league average. He has had two good starts in a row and the odds are good that he'll hit the over on his strikeouts once again today against the Milwaukee Brewers.
#1) DJ Herz: Over 5.5 -155
DJ Herz has been a solid rookie for the Washington Nationals this year. His strikeout rate is 29.4%, well above the average. His 11.46 K/9 is also excellent. Facing the San Francisco Giants, Herz is expected to pass his over/under line pretty easily.
