Toronto Blue Jays fans react to Brandon Belt’s deplorable start to season: "Looks lost up there and is a rally killer"

It appears that Brandon Belt may have left more than his heart in San Francisco after leaving the Giants for the Toronto Blue Jays last winter. Belt, a .261 hitter with San Francisco, started the season on a 1-for-17 slump through four games that included 11 strikeouts.

That's not the kind of statistic that Toronto was looking for out of its new designated hitter.

Belt signed a one-year, $9.3 million contract with the Blue Jays on Jan. 10th, leaving the San Francisco Giants after 12 big-league seasons. He put up solid, if unspectacular, statistics for the Giants from 2011-2022, hitting 175 home runs to go with his decent slugger's average.

Belt's bat has gone much colder than the Toronto winter. With the Blue Jays yet to play a home game this season, the 34-year-old is searching for where he put his bat through the team's long road trip to start the campaign.

Brandon Belt came to the Toronto Blue Jays bringing a stable bat and a wealth of postseason experience from his days in San Francisco. He won two World Series titles as part of the Giants' clubhouse in 2012 and 2014. Yet, so far, he has contributed just one run to Toronto's offensive efforts as they seek to reach the World Series for the first time since winning back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993.

As MLB fan bases tend to do, Toronto Blue Jays fans are leaning towards overreaction when it comes to Brandon Belt. Many are advocating sending him down to the Triple-A Buffalo — good luck sending a 12-year veteran to the minor leagues — others are recommending cutting him.

Others are looking for any excuse to bring another veteran first baseman/designated hitter to Toronto in the form of Canadian native Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds.

Cooler heads are prevailing in certain parts of Canada, however. The Blue Jays' three-game winning streak probably has something to do with that.

For some reason, one Blue Jays fan took the occasion of Brandon Belt's struggles to lash out at Chicago Cubs first baseman/designated hitter Eric Hosmer. Hosmer has never played for Toronto and wasn't widely rumored to be pursued by the Blue Jays last winter.

For the record, he is hitting .294 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Cubs.

The news got worse for Belt and the Blue Jays in Thursday's series finale at the Kansas City Royals.

Starting at first base as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. played designated hitter, Belt struck out three more times in going 0-for-4 to drop his batting average to .053.

The good news? Guerrero hit his second home run in as many games after going homerless in the team's first five contests.
