The season hasn't started the way the Toronto Blue Jays had hoped. Sunday's 9-4 loss against the St. Louis Cardinals has them with a record of 1-2, losing the three-game series.
The Blue Jays couldn't keep the Cardinals' bats quiet. Nolan Gorman, Brendan Donavon, and Alec Burleson all homered for St. Louis as Chris Bassitt struggled on the mound for Toronto. Bassitt pitched three innings, giving up 10 hits on nine runs and zero strikeouts.
Surprisingly, the Blue Jays haven't had any home runs so far this year. This is crazy for a team with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Matt Chapman, George Springer, and Bo Bichette.
While the season is young, it's a bit of a concerning start. Toronto will have to figure it out quickly as they start a series against the Kansas City Royals on Monday.
"Such a disappointing start to the season. The pitching has been awful. Long way to go but we can't start off badly again and have to play catch up all year," one fan tweeted.
"I know it's only 3 games in but pitching is concerning. Also 0 HR's through 3 games. Great to play small ball, but hopefully the HR's come soon. Onto tomorrow," another fan tweeted.
The lack of home runs and lackluster pitching have Toronto Blue Jays fans worried. They can't afford to fall into a hole, not with the division that they play in.
Fans are hoping the team can turn it around in Kansas City. Jose Berrios is slated to start on the mound for Toronto, with Kansas City going with Brady Singer.
The Toronto Blue Jays can't afford a woeful start
The Toronto Blue Jays play in arguably the toughest division in all of baseball. The American League East is no joke with the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, and Boston Red Sox. Throw in the Baltimore Orioles as well, who have an exciting team this season.
The Blue Jays need to get out and win the games they need to win. They cannot afford to drop games and expect to make the postseason this year. Not with how some of these other teams look on paper.
The offense should pick up in their series against the Royals. The team will surely hear the noise about their lack of home runs and will want to put an end to that quickly.
