It was not the year that veteran outfielder Travis Jankowski was hoping for. A World Series champion in 2023, Jankowski struggled to produce much of anything at the plate for the Texas Rangers. The 33-year-old appeared in 104 games for the Rangers last season, managing to put together a .200 batting average with a .508 OPS with only a single home run and 12 RBIs.
Even though Jankowski struggled mightily last season, he should be able to secure a contract ahead of the new campaign. While he may need to settle on a Minor League deal at this stage of his career, he can be an effective depth piece for several teams looking to add to their outfield.
The outfield free agent continues to shrink with players such as Jurickson Profar coming off the market. While Jankowski may not be an All-Star caliber player, he could be an affordable option for teams looking for a flexible veteran to come off of the bench.
Here's a closer look at three potential landing spots for Travis Jankowski in free agency.
3 potential landing spots for Travis Jankowski via free agency
#1. Los Angeles Angels
The Los Angeles Angels have shown a willingness to bring in veteran players to bolster their roster ahead of the new campaign. Earlier this week, the Angels signed Tim Anderson to a minor league deal, something they could also do for Jankowski.
The team has expressed moving superstar Mike Trout out of the outfield in an attempt to keep him healthy. While Jankowski would likely not be a starter for the team, he could help provide the club with some flexibility and options in the outfield.
#2. Texas Rangers
The Rangers will be determined to return to contention after a disappointing 2024 campaign which saw them miss the postseason altogether. The team has several promising young outfielders such as Evan Carter and Wyatt Langford. However, keeping a familiar veteran such as Travis Jankowski in the clubhouse could help the team if their young players struggle or injuries occur.
#3. Philadelphia Phillies
Despite being one of the favorites to win the World Series in the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies are rather shallow in terms of outfield depth. With Bryce Harper moving to first base full-time and Kyle Schwarber being the team's everyday DH, the Phillies could use additional help in the outfield.
Even though the club has added Max Kepler this offseason, adding Travis Jankowski could provide some additional depth for the long year ahead. Jankowski will also be available on an affordable deal, making him an easy add for Philadelphia, which may want to focus its budget elsewhere.
