Trevor Bauer was reinstated by Major League Baseball but was then cut by the Los Angeles Dodgers after serving a 194-game suspension for violating the MLB-MLBPA Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.
He's without a home with a month remaining in Spring Training. Teams in need of a pitcher are likely going to pass on the former Cy Young award winner.
However, a few teams would seriously benefit from signing him. He's got talent and he's not in danger of losing eligibility. The optics would be bad, but he'd help a lot of teams regardless.
Here are three teams that could benefit from his services:
#1 San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres will be without Joe Musgrove for a portion of the season after he suffered a toe injury in the weight room. That loss could be offset by the addition of Bauer. While the loss isn't going to last that long, the Padres will have one of the deepest rotations in baseball when both are active.
Bauer's a controversial figure, but he would slide in nicely as a two or three starter with the Padres and help them further assert themselves as true contenders.
#2 Houston Astros
The Houston Astros probably don't need anyone else. They're already the favorites to win it all again, but Bauer's addition would put all contenders in a dire situation. The Astros lost Justin Verlander to the New York Mets, and while they have a deep rotation behind him, having that ace frontline starter is key. Bauer could be that for the right team.
#3 New York Yankees
His beef with Gerrit Cole aside, Trevor Bauer to the New York Yankees makes sense. The Yankees could use him as a back-end starter, which removes a lot of the pressure for him. He would be their fifth starter.
This would also protect the rotation. They lost Frankie Montas, likely for the entire season, and will have to turn to backups to fill that spot. It's not a terrible situation to be in, but when Nestor Cortes, Luis Severino, and Carlos Rodon have or have had injuries in the past, the depth can be removed in an instant.
