Ty Blach was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies on Sunday morning. The veteran arm has spent most of his time in the MLB as a swingman, playing both as a starter and reliever.
After a decent start to his career, Blach has tapered away with a poor 2024 recording a 6.94 ERA in 71.1 innings pitched. He is 3-8 as a starter and has not received a decision in his favor since June.
At 33 years of age and a torrid season, it is hard to assume that Blach will fit the plans of any of the top teams in contention. Here's a look at three teams who could pursue the pitcher off waivers.
3 potential landing spots for Ty Blach
Chicago White Sox
The White Sox are headed for the worst MLB season in terms of losses. Their rebuild could take more than one season but if they are looking at the 2025 campaign, they will need to add pitchers after Garrett Crochet in the rotation to at least compete.
Their rotation includes Chris Flexen and Jonathan Cannon who have only managed just five wins this season. Even their relievers have the second-worst ERA with 4.98. They could well use a swingman like Blach.
Miami Marlins
Another team that is having a tough 2024 is the Miami Marlins. After a lot of activity at the trade deadline, Miami's pitching staff depth is thin right now. They need to add some pieces as part of their rebuild plan.
They have the second-worst ERA for all starters this season with 5.31. While Blach hasn't done particularly well as a starter, a minor-league stint for the remainder of the season can give him some confidence heading into 2025. The Marlins organization is known to bring the best out of their players in the minors.
LA Angels
The Halos have been plagued with injuries to their pitching staff all year long. Their relievers have managed a reasonable 4.05 ERA while their starting pitchers are the fifth worst with a 4.76 ERA. They have Jose Soriano, Andrew Wantz and Jose Marte suffering from long stints in the IL. If a promotion from the minors opens up, Blach could secure himself a contract.
