Tom Brady is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He's easily one of the most accomplished as he has won more Super Bowl titles than every other franchise has. Naturally, no other player has as many, either.
He's been atop the NFL world for over two decades. There will likely never be another player like him now that he's retired. Football will never be the same, but it often gets lost that Brady almost played in the MLB. Was Brady drafted into the MLB?
Was Tom Brady drafted in the MLB?
Tom Brady was in fact drafted into the MLB. He was selected in the 1995 MLB Draft by the Montreal Expos. They took a shot on the future NFL star with the 507th pick.
Ultimately, Brady decided on football and stayed in college until the year 2000 when he was then drafted by the New England Patriots.
Brady was an interesting baseball prospect. Naturally, if he was drafted at all out of high school, he had talent.
He probably could have made it as a baseball player, though it is significantly easier to make it to the NFL than the MLB.
He may have been stuck as a minor league player, which would have robbed the sports world of one of its all-time figures.
According to Yahoo! Sports, John Hughes, the MLB scout responsible for drafting Tom Brady, said:
“I never had as much fun scouting a player that we eventually didn’t sign. We knew we didn’t have a good chance to sign him because he had the scholarship [to play football for the University of] Michigan.”
He continued:
“He was drafted in the 18th round because everyone knew how difficult it would be to sign him. He was very talented. I mean on talent alone he would have been projected a late second-round pick. And I believe he would have made it, as a catcher, he would have gotten there.”
Hughes' inclination would turn out to be correct. Brady never played in the MLB and instead went on to have one of the best careers in all of sports.
