Oakland Athletics outfielder Lawrence Butler had a date with destiny during his team's second game of the series against the Houston Astros on Tuesday. However, the A's OF missed out on history to the dismay of the fans at Oakland Coliseum.

Butler registered a triple from the leadoff spot against Astros starter Jake Bloss and Brent Rooker followed it up with a two-run homer to give the A's an early lead in the first inning.

The 24-year-old got the better of Bloss yet again in the third inning, extending the home team's lead with a solo home run. He racked up a double in the sixth inning as Athletics fans believed in the slugger's pursuit of a cycle on the night.

However, just a single away from hitting for the cycle, Rafael Montero intentionally walked the in-form hitter in the eighth inning. The Astros reliever ended cycle hopes as the A's led the game 8-1. Oakland fans didn't appreciate the antics of the pitcher with a father-son duo caught fuming in the front row.

Lawrence Butler reflects on his near miss in Athletics win

While the Oakland Athletics fans didn't appreciate the Astros walking Lawrence Butler, the outfielder blamed himself for missing out on the opportunity to etch his name in the record books.

“He gave me a pitch to hit,” Butler said. “I just missed it, so I can’t be too mad. A walk is a walk. I got on base for the team, so I’m satisfied.

Although Butler was satisfied by the win, had he hit for the cycle on Tuesday, he would've become the first A's player to accomplish the feat since Mark Ellis in 2007. But the weight of history told on the 24-year-old right fielder when he walked to the plate in the eighth inning.

“I was actually nervous walking up to the plate,” Butler said. “I was trying my hardest not to smile. The crowd got loud.”

However, the outfielder is now the first rightfielder since Jose Canseco in 1988 to register multiple hits in six consecutive games for the A's. A remarkable slugging performance also saw Butler being crowned the American League Player of the Week ahead of the Midsummer Classic earlier this month.
