It has been nearly a decade since Yordan Alvarez defected from Cuba, established residence in Haiti, and garnered an MLB contract. In honor of the Astros star's birthday on June 27, Alvarez's wife, Monica, recognized all of her husband's achievements.

In an upload on her personal Instagram account, Monica compiled a series of pictures of herself and Yordan, as well as their children Mia and Jordan. The caption of the video translated to English reads:

"Happy birthday to the best husband, father and friend."

Like her husband Yordan, Monica was born in Cuba. However, she emigrated when she was a child and settled in Florida with her family. She began dating Yordan Alvarez when he arrived in America, and the two got engaged and married in 2021.

Soon after Alvarez defected in 2016, he began receiving big-time offers from MLB teams. In June 2016, he inked a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers for $2 million. However, after spending some time in the minor leagues, Alvarez was traded to Houston in 2019, where his career really began to take off.

In his freshman season of 2019, Alvarez hit .313/.412/.655 with 27 home runs and 78 RBIs to win the AL Rookie of the Year Award with the Houston Astros. Now a three-time All-Star and career .294 hitter, the 27-year-old has 16 home runs, 41 RBIs, and a slash line of .288/.360/.515 this season.

Yordan Alvarez is all clear after missing time due to a "family matter"

Last week, Alvarez missed three games on account of a "family matter." Although it is not known what the nature of his absence was, everyone can agree he has been putting forth some commendable hitting. As Astros manager Joe Espada told the Houston Chronicle:

"Just giving him some time to deal with it so he can be back has soon as possible."

Regardless of what the matter was, Yordan Alvarez is back in the lineup. With him under contract until 2028, Monica and their children can likely look forward to several more years of watching Alvarez make a difference for Houston. This season, he is an integral part of a team that appears to be turning their campaign around.
