Team Japan continues to dominate at the World Baseball Classic. Backed by a boisterous crowd at the Tokyo Dome, Japan's offense was unstoppable. The lineup combined for 13 hits and one home run. Japan overpowered Korea to win the game 13-4.
While the story of Japan's first game versus China was Shohei Ohtani, this was a combined effort and the team as a whole stepped up and played at an extremely high level.
Japan trailed 3-0 early in the game but were resiliant. They maintained their composure and scored 13 runs over a five-inning stretch.
Baseball fans from around the globe took to Twitter to commend Japan on the outstanding game:
This was an all-round performance from Team Japan. Every member of the team played their part.
Outfielder Kensuke Kondah recorded Japan's only home run of the game in the fifth inning. He finished with two hits, three runs, three RBIs and two walks on the night.
The Boston Red Sox's newly-signed star Masataka Yoshida batted in five runs on three hits. St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar had a big game. He finished 2-4 with an RBI and two runs. Yu Darvish and Shota Imanaga pitched the opening six innings and held the Korean offense to just four runs.
Team Japan are targeting a record third World Baseball Classic championship
Japan sent a message by making this game look easy versus a strong Korean team which has several current and former MLB stars on the roster, including San Diego Padres' Ha-Seong Kim and St. Louis Cardinals' Tommy Edman.
Team Japan is the only nation to win multiple World Baseball Classics. They won the inaugural event in 2006 and repeated the feat in 2009. Japan has never finished outside the top three in the tournament.
Led by Shohei Ohtani, Team Japan has set the standard at the World Baseball Classic. Korea was a major test and they passed with flying colors. The victory places them as one of the favorites for a record third World Baseball Classic championship.
