When Alex Rodriguez poked fun at himself for not being fit to lead the Yankees

Alex Rodriguez is known as one of the most successful Yankees.

Rodriguez was selected first overall by the Seattle Mariners in the 1993 MLB draft. He debuted with the Mariners the following year. He would go on to sign the most expensive contract at the time when he agreed to a 10-year contract worth $252 million with the Texas Rangers in 2001.

However, he is famously known as a Yankees star and even ended his career with the team. The third baseman even won the World Championship title with the Yankees and ten All-Star titles.

In a 2017 USA Today interview, Rodriguez stated that he has no interest in returning as a player. The former shortstop, however, still has a bat in his office, not just for playing but as a nostalgic attachment.

“If you hit .200, you wouldn’t pick up a bat either,” Rodriguez joked, “I do have one in my locker — I’m sorry, not my locker — in my office, and every once in a while, when I need to think better, I just grab that thing.”

Even though Alex Rodriguez denied the possibility of returning as a player, many hoped that he might return to the Yankees in a managerial position. However, hopes were dashed just as quickly in the same interview. He said he didn't want to hold that position either while making a joke about parenting.

“No aspirations to manage,” Rodriguez said. “I’m trying to manage my daughters, and most of the time they manage me. So, no.”

Alex Rodriguez won a total of 14 All-Star titles and three AL MVP titles. He would later found A-Rod Crop, a holding company.

In 2016, Rodriguez finally hung his Yankees hat and decided to retire from active playing. During a press conference announcing his retirement, Alex Rodriguez revealed how much he appreciated the team. He even talked about what he planned to do after retirement.

“I’m definitely grateful for what I get to be doing now, to be around the young kids and talk about what’s expected here,” he said. “I’m in a unique position from all the things I’ve done in this game, both good and bad, and I learned my biggest lessons with some of my mistakes."

Rodriguez is also the owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves, an NBA team. He also has several business endeavors and has taken part in charity since his retirement.
