The New York Yankees won the 2009 World Series under Derek Jeter's captainship. Though Jeter was dedicated to his craft and had an elite mentality on the field, he credited divine intervention for the win.
“I believe in ghosts,” Jeter told the press in 2009. “We have some ghosts in this Stadium!”
The Yankee squad, led by Jeter, went to the Babe Ruth statue to express their gratitude after their victory.
Derek Jeter was the longest-serving Yankee captain
Nicknamed "El Capitan," Jeter was the longest-serving Yankee captain. In addition to the four championships he had won before being designated captain by George Steinbrenner during the 2003 season, Jeter's Yankees advanced to two World Series, winning one in 2009.
"Can’t believe it’s been 8 years since my last game at Yankee Stadium" - Derek Jeter
Jeter accrued the most hits for the Yankees throughout his tenure as captain and became the first player to reach 3,000 hits while donning pinstripes.
"Great to be back home at Yankee Stadium! Thanks to everyone for making it such a special night for me and my family. The girls had a blast and finally got their ice cream." - Derek Jeter
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2020. Jeter garnered 396 out of 397 votes (99.75%), the second-highest percentage in MLB history (behind his teammate Mariano Rivera) and the highest by a position player.
