In 2013, the Dominican Republic won the World Baseball Classic tournament. The team won the World Cup in 1948 and then the World Baseball Classic title in 2013.

However, it took a struggle for the team to get to where they are. The Dominican Republic won all 8 of their eight games and became the first team to have not lost a single game in the World Baseball Classic.

Fernando Rodney, who was part of the Dominican team, had the following to say about winning the tournament, to USA Today:

"I just want to wave my country's flag high in the air. We proved we are the best baseball country in the world."

When asked about how their small country was able to form a team that was able to achieve the success it did, Rodney had the following to say:

"Because we eat lots of plantains. Dominicans eat more plantains than people from any other country."

The 2013 World Baseball Classic is still the only time where a team has won all their games in the tournament.

Cano played a major role in the team's progress throughout the competition. When asked about his thoughts on the WBC tournament, he said the following, thanking his team:

"This is something that you are never going to get it done by yourself. So I want to thank the guys, my teammates, the manager, also the Dominican team for giving me that opportunity to be here with all these guys, all this great talent"

The second baseman continued with:

"And it's like I said, without my teammates, I would have never won an MVP. So I would say it's not only me, it's about the whole team. We proved that (throughout the tournament) and in this game."

The Dominican Republic team went against the Puerto Rico team in the finals, and many were not expecting Puerto Rico to make it this far. However, the team surprised everyone with their grit. Robinson Cano was also named MVP of the entire tournament.
