Former New York Mets star Darryl Strawberry's storied baseball career was marred by controversies and addictions.
Strawberry has always been open about his struggles with addiction and depression since he retired, and he once divulged details of his dugout shenanigans.
In a 2017 appearance on "The Dr. Oz Show," Strawberry said that his sex addiction had reached a stage where he had to indulge during games.
"I would go between innings, and stuff like that and run back and have a little party going on. You know, I thought it was pretty cool. That was just the addiction, the drive."
Strawberry also claimed on Mad Dog Radio on SiriusXM in 2016 that all he needed to do was identify a woman in the throng and instruct a clubhouse attendant to bring her down.
New York Yankees star Darryl Strawberry spoke candidly about his struggles with addiction
When Strawberry appeared on "60 Minutes" in 2001, he spoke openly about the personal issues that impacted his baseball career.
"Drinking and drugging, that was the big deep hole, I was addicted to the women. I was addicted to the drinking. I was addicted to the drugs."
In 1986, Strawberry contributed to World Series victories by the New York Mets and Yankees (1996 and 1999). But his off-field issues always remained a cause for concern.
He played in his final major league game in 1999.
When Bud Selig, the former commissioner, learned that Darryl Strawberry had tested positive for cocaine in February 2000, he suspended him for the entire season. With this suspension, his baseball career was effectively over.
Strawberry said he used alcohol to numb his feelings a year after receiving the sentence.
"Dealing with the effects of childhood abuse and how it affected me in so many [ways]. Drinking became a part where I just escaped from it and stuffed my feelings down. I have done that for years where I stuffed my feelings down and never really expressed how I feel."
