Paul Lo Duca is a well-known New York Mets icon, and what he is also known for is the affair that led to his separation from his wife.
The Mets star threatened to boycott the New York Times after they posted an article revealing why the catcher was getting divorced. In 2006, the ex-wife of Lo Duca, Sonia, a former Playboy model, filed for divorce.
The article claimed the Mets catcher was having an affair with a 19-year-old college student from Long Island. The two met when Lo Duca went to Long Island for spring training.
His wife allegedly caught wind of it and filed for divorce. The Mets player revealed his thoughts on why the divorce was in procession:
“Is just one of those things where we’re going our separate ways. There’s more written than I thought would be written. So I am hoping there is nothing else. There shouldn’t be anything else."
He added:
“There are no skeletons in the closet. Nothing. It’s . . . done and over with.”
Paul Lo Duca and his former wife have a child together, a daughter named Bella. The child was only 20 months old when the details of the affair were brought to light.
When Paul Lo Duca's mistress revealed the insights into their relationship
Paul Lo Duca dated 19-year-old college student Krista Guterman.
When the girl was asked by the New York Times about the nature of her relationship with the Mets player, she had the following things to say:
“He’s fun – for an older man. I didn’t know he was married. If I knew he was married, I wouldn’t have dated him.”
Guterman added:
“He’s a scumbag for lying to me. We would go to his place [in Long Island] and hang out."
When asked if it was a serious relationship, she continued her statements with:
"It was fun. I would call it a fling. No. We dated. He’s a fun guy. He has a good personality. We’re good friends. We still talk a lot on the phone.”
Though it might have just been a fling between the two, it resulted in severe marital consequences for Paul Lo Duca.
