The New York Yankees and New York Mets are both in the Championship Series. Each of them now officially stands four wins away from a World Series berth. If they both made it, it would be a Subway Series World Series, which is a rare and impressive matchup. They play most years, but almost never in the postseason.
The last time this happened was in 2000. The Yankees were the AL champions, and the Mets were crowned in the NL. They met up for a local World Series, and the Yankees ended up winning in five, a gentleman's sweep.
That is the only time these two teams have matched up in a World Series before. The Mets have only been in the Fall Classic five times, losing three of them. The Yankees, on the other hand, have 27 wins in the World Series.
Should they match up this year, which is possible but far from guaranteed, they will do something special and rare for baseball in New York.
Will the Yankees and Mets play a Subway Series World Series?
Once the New York Mets snuck into the playoffs with a win in a doubleheader one day after the conclusion of the regular season, the possibility for a New York World Series was on. The New York Yankees had long clinched by then.
The Yankees had a bye, but when the Mets ousted the Milwaukee Brewers in three games in the Wild Card Series, it became even more possible. Now, both teams are on to the LCS.
Neither team knows its opponent. They both handled their series in four games. The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres are battling for the chance to take on the Mets, while the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers face off to head to the Bronx.
Currently, the Yankees are the World Series favorite, so they automatically have the best odds of making it out of the AL. As for the Mets, they have the second-best odds in the NL. The Dodgers are slightly ahead of them. Should they advance, those odds might even get stronger.
If the Padres advance to face the Mets, it will be interesting to see how the odds shake out. Nevertheless, the Mets have an uphill climb to make it to a World Series, while the Yankees seemingly have an easier path.
