Liam Hendriks was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma over the offseason. His career and specifically the 2023 season were in doubt, but it appears that the electric reliever will be returning to the Chicago White Sox sooner than expected.
As one would expect, Hendriks is on the Injured List. He's unable to play, so he was placed on the IL. The length of his IL stint might be telling.
Hendriks landed on the 15-day IL rather than the 60-day. The 60-day generally means someone's season is over or they're going to miss the majority of it. That evidently won't be the case for the reliever amid his battle with cancer.
There's no timetable yet, but it appears he'll be back sooner than later.
White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks recovering well
The White Sox appear to believe Hendriks is doing very well in his recovery.
Manager Rick Hahn told the media via NBC Sports:
"He is making very good progress and while we don't currently have a specific timeline available to share with you on his potential return, those of you that pay close attention to our roster will notice that we have not placed him on the 60-day IL, and that is on purpose."
This indicates that Hendriks will be back before June, or at least that the White Sox believe he can be. He's progressing very well in his treatment, which is incredible news. He's also getting close to a return, which will be good news for Chicago.
