In May 2018, New York Mets pitcher Justin Verlander called out Danry Vasquez, who was caught on video abusing his girlfriend. Vasquez was a prospect for the Houston Astros when a two-year-old video surfaced online in which he was seen striking his now ex-girlfriend several times in a stairwell at Whataburger Field.
Verlander, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, was livid and took to Twitter to express his anger.
"F***k you man. I hope the rest of your life without baseball is horrible. You deserve all that is coming your way!"

After video footage of the domestic violence incident was leaked online, the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball released Vasquez on March 23, 2018.
Justin Verlander received backlash when he didn't address Roberto Osuna's domestic violence case

In May 2018, Roberto Osuna was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman while he was a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. Osuna was suspended for 75 games without pay for violating the league's domestic violence policy.
While Osuna was serving the suspension, he was traded to the Houston Astros from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Just months earlier, Justin Verlander had raised his voice against Danry Vasquez for assaulting his now ex-girlfriend. However, Verlander chose to keep quiet about Osuna's incident, and his silence raised eyebrows. MLB fans saw it as hypocrisy.
As per USA Today, Justin Verlander said:
"I just want to listen, we don’t know the details of much. I haven’t really paid attention to [Osuna's case] for obvious reasons–it wasn’t really in my life.
"Now it is. That’s probably going to be a personal thing that stays in the locker room and won’t be talked about publicly, as those things are."
In September 2018, charges against Osuna were dropped when the alleged victim declined to travel back to Canada to pursue the case.
