Robinson Cano's agent, Van Wagenen, came to the defense of the second baseman during a New York Times interview in November 2020.
Cano failed a drug test after he was caught taking furosemide, a diuretic substance that masks the use of PEDs. He was suspended from MLB for 80 games.
The New York Mets player told reporters that the drug he took was for an ailment but did not specify which one.
His agent said that the drug he used was prescribed by a doctor in the Dominican Republic.
“I don’t want to get into semantics, but I do think it’s important remembering Robbie was not suspended for a PED,” Van Wagenen said. “He was suspended for a diuretic.”
Wagenen was insistent that it should be known what was responsible for Robinson's suspension.
Robinson Cano received a second suspension a few years later
Robinson Cano clearly failed to learn from his mistakes and was suspended for a second time after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug stanozolol. He missed the entire 2021 season.
Sandy Alderson, the former president of the New York Mets, released a statement at the time expressing how disappointed the whole team was with Cano and what he had done.
“The violation is very unfortunate for him, the organization, our fans, and the sport,” said Sandy Alderson.
"It’s time to pack it up @RobinsonCano… I cant watch the fall off be this bad" Twitter user Framed Frier wrote
Cano last played for the Atlanta Braves in 2022. He was released in August and is currently a free agent.
