Who is Coby Mayo? The Orioles' No. 2 prospect who could follow the footsteps of Jackson Holliday and Gunnar Henderson

The Baltimore Orioles are very good right now, and they could be for a very long time thanks to prospects such as Coby Mayo. He is currently their No. 2 overall prospect and he's a player for which there is tons of excitement. He's already had a little bit of action at the MLB level, and while it hasn't been successful, the Orioles have good reason to believe their future is solid.

So far, Mayo has struggled in the big leagues. He has a -10 wRC+ and a shocking -0.4 fWAR. He has a .059 average and a .200 on-base percentage. Fortunately, it's only been seven games and 20 plate appearances, although that does make the fWAR even more concerning.

This is very much like another heralded prospect in the Orioles system. Jackson Holliday still ranks as their top prospect. He came up earlier in the season and was dismal, hitting even worse than Mayo with a -54 wRC+.

Now, Holliday looks like a big leaguer in his second stint with the team. Whether or not Mayo gets another trip back to the minor leagues, there's good reason to think the MLB's No. 10 prospect will bounce back like Holliday did.

Those two are unlike Gunnar Henderson, a former top prospect who won Rookie of the Year and was an MVP contender for much of the 2024 season. He didn't struggle to acclimate as much as the other two, but they're all why the Orioles have such a bright future.

All about Coby Mayo

Coby Mayo was selected in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB Draft. Despite that being quite a while ago, Mayo is still just 22 years old. He is still very young and has time to overcome the early struggles he is facing.

In 2023, he reached the Triple-A level at age 21 and hit 29 homers with a .973 OPS, harkening back to the corner infield comparison to Austin Riley that scouts pegged for him in the draft.

He has a good bat speed and is strong. If he can make it to the MLB level and stay, the Orioles will have third base, shortstop and second base all filled by recent top prospects. Not many teams can claim that.
