The Martian is a nickname given to an up and coming New York Yankees star. 20-year-old prospect Jasson Dominguez is considered to be a true five-tool player and that his talent is out of this world, hence the name The Martian.
The Yankees have finally brought Dominguez up to the big leagues for Spring Training this year and he is absolutely raking.
Thus far, he's batting .417 with a .500 on-base percentage. He's also got an otherworldly OPS of 1.417. It's a small sample size, but the Martian is on the comeup.
For evidence of this, look no further than Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves. In the latter innings, Dominguez crushed his second home run of the spring to give the Yankees a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Dominguez's home run erased an early deficit thanks to a subpar start from Carlos Rodon and gave the Yankees a clutch win.
It wasn't expected that Dominguez would make the Yankees out of spring, but if he continues this torrid pace, it will be hard to deny him a spot. New York has an open job in left field, one that their second overall prospect may be perfectly suited for.
Can The Martian make the Yankees?
It's not often that the New York Yankees have had such a young prospect come up early and contribute. Even Gleyber Torres debuted when he was 21, which was pretty young anyway.
Dominguez figured to be a ways away from the majors, but he has a real shot to at least be the fourth outfielder on the roster.
It's a perfect storm. The Yankees desperately need another outfielder and they need a big bat to help propel them past the Houston Astros. The Martian is both of those things.
If he continues this torrid pace, the Yankees front office will be forced to make a decision. Do they want to bring him up early and risk the development or lose some service time? Or would they rather roll the dice on a less than stellar option in left field?
As he continues playing well, he may make that decision for them.
