The New York Yankees are scheduled to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates today as their Spring Training rolls on. They continue to get healthier and more prepared for the season as the spring continues. Today, they'll send reliever Lou Trivino to the mound.
Trivino came over to the team in the Frankie Montas trade and proved to be a key contributor. He appeared in 25 games last season and posted a sterling 1.66 ERA. He was big down the stretch, too, as injuries piled up. He proved to be more valuable than Montas in that trade.
The Yankees lost Chad Green to the Toronto Blue Jays and Lucas Luetge to the Atlanta Braves. Aroldis Chapman also signed with the Royals, so the bullpen is not as deep as it was last season.
This will be an important test for Trivino. Clay Holmes, Wandy Peralta, Scott Effross and others will be highly leveraged pitchers in the bullpen. If Abreu can perform well in spring, he might get more responsibility in the regular season.
Battles to watch as Yankees take on Pirates today
Aside from who gets to do what in the bullpen, the Yankees have a few key battles occurring throughout Spring Training. They don't have a starting left fielder or a starting shortstop.
Anthony Volpe, Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are all battling for the shortstop position. None have emerged as the frontrunner yet and each have looked good sparingly.
In left field, it's even less clear. The Yankees may have to turn back to struggling veteran Aaron Hicks, but Oswaldo Cabrera, Jasson Dominguez and even Tayler Aguilar could be in the mix.
However, unlike at shortstop, these options are less proven. Volpe is the top prospect in baseball and the other three options played shortstop during the postseason last year.
Dominguez hasn't even sniffed the majors and Aguilar isn't even a top 30 prospect. Hicks has not been the player he used to be for some time now. If Cabrera has to play shortstop, then the Yanks don't have a lot of options.
