It's a dream come true for St. Louis Cardinals prospect Thomas Saggese. According to MLB insider Robert Murray, the Cards will call up the 22-year-old infielder, which could mean a major league debut soon.
A fifth round pick for the Texas Rangers in the 2020 MLB Draft, Thomas Saggese was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals last season in a four-player deal that saw Jordan Montgomery make the jump to Texas. Although Saggese's promotion to the majors comes in the wake of an injury to Brendan Donovan, he is a top propsect who has proven his worth.
Saggese, who was born in Carlsbad, California, is currently ranked as the No. 4 prospect for the St. Louis Cardinals. He will now get the opportunity to prove himself at the MLB level. Through 125 games in Triple-A this season, Saggese has shown a little bit of everything, posting a .253 batting average with 20 home runs, 67 RBIs and nine stolen bases.
Saggese's defensive versatility is another strength, as the the infielder prospect has spent time at second and third base, as well as shortstop.
It remains to be seen how much playing time he will recieve given the other proven infielders on the roster, including Nolan Gorman, Nolan Arenado and Masyn Winn. Competition aside, this is a major milestone in the young prospect's career.
Entering Tuesday's action, the St. Louis Cardinals find themselves 6.5 games outside of the final National League Wild Card spot. If Brendan Donovan winds up on the IL, Saggese could see his MLB debut take place during a crucial postseason push.
Thomas Saggese honors his late mother before every game
Saggese's promotion to the MLB is not only a major moment for the infielder but his family as well. The 22-year-old's mother Wendi lost her battle with breast cancer in 2020, something that helps motivate him each day. In MLB insider John Denton’s newsletter, Cardinals Beat, Saggese explained in 2023 how he honors his mother before each game.
Saggese has the word "MORE" written on tape around his wrist when he plays as a way of showing his love for his late mother. According to Thomas Saggese, his mother used to tell him, “I love you … more."
When Thomas Saggese makes his MLB debut, it will undoubtedly be an emotional moment for his entire family.
