Cuban-born former New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes belongs from an athletic family. His mother, Estela Milanés is a star softball pitcher on the Cuban National Team and his father, Cresencio Cespedes, is a former Cuban League Catcher. No wonder, the 2× All-Star (2014, 2016) has inherited his parent's genes.

Yoenis' parents, Estela and Cresencio divorced when he was a year old. At the age of 10, Cespedes' mother sent him to a public school so he could concentrate on developing his baseball skills. Yoenis was also exposed to the sport by Estela when visiting stadiums with her as a young boy.
Former New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes' journey to MLB
Like many previous generations of Cuban players who played in the MLB, Yoenis Cespedes too had to undergo defection.
In 2011, Céspedes traveled to the Dominican Republic from Cuba by motorboat. He then contacted Dominican agent Edgar Mercedes after coming into the country. Since Edgat set up residence for Cespedes in Santiago, it enabled the 2015 Gold Glove winner to avoid the MLB Draft and sign as a free agent.
Following interest from a number of MLB teams, Céspedes signed a four-year, $36 million contract with the Oakland Athletics on February 13, 2012. He made his big league debut on March 28, 2012.
During his shortlived MLB career, Yoenis played with Oakland Athletics (2012–2014), Boston Red Sox (2014), Detroit Tigers (2015), and New York Mets (2015–2018, 2020).
Here are his MLB career highlights and awards:
- 2× All-Star (2014, 2016)
- Gold Glove Award (2015)
- Silver Slugger Award (2016)
