Alex Verdugo is one of the best players for the Boston Red Sox, but he's not suiting up with the American team for the World Baseball Classic. Mookie Betts, the man Verdugo was traded for in 2020, Mike Trout and company will not have the services of the fiery outfielder.

This is because Verdugo is a Mexican-American, which means he can play for Team Mexico. Ironically, the Mexican team faces off with the United States in what will be one of the best and most important matchups of the Group stage.

Alex Verdugo joins Mexican WBC roster

The Red Sox outfielder has played for Mexico before in 2017 and often represents his country during the MLB regular season. He's proud of his country and loves representing it.

Verdugo once said about playing for Mexico via NESN:

“It’s special for me, man. I love the colors. Putting them on just makes me feel a type of way.”

Along with Randy Arozarena, Alex Verdugo will be tasked with carrying the Mexican team. In a pool alongside the United States, Colombia, Canada and Great Britain, Mexico has its work cut out for them in terms of qualifying for the next round.

This matchup is huge, because the United States are one of the favorites to win the WBC. Verdugo and Mexico will want to get the upset victory so they can continue on a path towards the second round.

A 1-1 start is fine and certainly not insurmountable. However, a 2-0 start would all but guarantee a place in the next round. Expect Verdugo and his Mexican companions to give Team USA a tough battle.
