On June 18, 2013, Wheeler pitched six scoreless innings in the second game of a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves to make his major league debut with the New York Mets. Wheeler won 6-1 with seven strikeouts against just four hits. Two months later, on August 15, Wheeler defeated the San Diego Padres 4-1 while fanning a career-high 12 batters. He did this to become the first Mets pitcher since Doc Gooden in 1986 to record at least 12 strikeouts in a game.
