Andrew Wiggins is a small forward for the Golden State Warriors. He was an important part of the Dubs that won the 2022 NBA championship.
Born and bred in Toronto, Ontario, Wiggins inherited a set of athletic genes from his father, a former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins and Olympic track and mother, a field sprinter Marita Payne-Wiggins. His journey towards pro basketball began at Vaughan Secondary School in Vaughan, where he led the AAAA basketball team to an outstanding 44–1 record and clinched the Ontario provincial championship.
A move to Huntington Prep School in West Virginia in 2011 was a turning point as Wiggins earned prestigious titles such as the 2013 Naismith Prep Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball USA. He was also the first Canadian to be named the Gatorade National Player of the Year.
The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Wiggins first overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. Interestingly, he was only the second player since the ABA–NBA merger to be drafted as the top pick and then being traded without playing a single game for the team that originally selected him. This distinction placed him alongside Chris Webber, who faced a similar scenario in 1993.
Joining the Minnesota Timberwolves, Wiggins flourished as an impressive small forward. In his rookie season, he earned NBA Rookie of the Year and NBA All-Rookie First Team honors, solidifying him as a rising young star. After five seasons in Minnesota, Wiggins was traded to the Golden State Warriors, where he evolved into an All-Star level two-way player.
His journey reached new heights in 2022 when he helped the Warriors win an NBA championship. In the 2022 NBA Finals, Wiggins finished as the leading rebounder, shot-blocker, and the second-highest scorer for the Warriors, averaging an impressive 18.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game.
