The Brooklyn Nets had largely been seen as sidekicks to their more lavish counterparts in the Big Apple, the New York Knicks. The Brooklyn Nets already had a stacked roster and their salary bill was well into luxury tax at the start of the 2021 offseason. They were still linked with a few players because they owned free agent Spencer Dinwiddie's Bird Rights. The Nets eventually ended up sending him to the Washington Wizards in a sign-and-trade that netted them multiple draft picks and an $11 million traded player exception.
