Jalen Brunson: A Brief Biography

Jalen Brunson is an American professional basketball player who plays for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is currently playing his 4th season and was chosen by the Dallas Mavericks as the 33rd overall pick in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft.

Early Life

Brunson played his high school basketball for Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. As a junior, he was considered one of the top point guards in the country and was rated as number one by Scout.com.

Brunson was named the 2014 Illinois Boys Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year. He also participated in the 2015 McDonald's All-American Boys Game, and 2015 Jordan Brand Classic and represented Team USA in the Nike Hoop Summit. In his senior year, Brunson was again named Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year. He helped the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) win the Class 4A championship and was named for third Associated Press All-state recognition.

Following the season, Brunson was named Illinois Mr. Basketball. After graduating from high school in 2014–15, he joined Villanova University. He helped the Wildcats win the championship game of the 2016 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament and was named 2015–16 Big East Conference Preseason Freshman of the Year and to the Big East All-Freshman Team selection. In his sophomore year, Brunson was named the unanimous 2016–17 All-Big East first-team selection for the 2016–17 Wildcats.

In his junior year, he helped the team win the championship game of the 2018 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, giving Villanova their second National Championship in three seasons. He was also named National Player of the Year and a Consensus first-team 2018 All-American. Brunson was drafted as the 33rd overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks.

Brunson signed a four-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks with a three years guarantee. He played his debut match in October 2018 and scored 3 points and one rebound and one assists against the Phoenix Suns. As his teammates J.J Barea and Devin Harris got injured, Brunson got a chance to showcase his skills, then he played his first career double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Brunson averaged career-highs in points, rebounds, and assists during the 2020–21 NBA season, hence, he was placed fourth in the vote for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. The 2021-22 season went well for the Brunson, Mavericks reached the Western Conference finals after beating the Suns in a one-sided game streak but faced a loss with the Warriors in the finals.

Brunson then got transferred to the New York Knicks and agreed to a four-year, $104 million deal on July 12, 2022. Brunson was chosen as The NBA Eastern conference player of the month for February 2023 and also won his first NBA player of the month honor.
