The LIV Golf professional tour is a young golf tour that rivals the PGA Tour.Supported by the Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund. In January 2025, Scott O'Neil replaced Greg Norman as the CEO of the League. In 2022, the tour launched with an eight-hole, no-cut stroke play format. In its fourth season, 2025, 54 players divided into 13 teams (four golfers each) will play in 14 no-cut, 54-hole events. Notably, the name "LIV" refers to the event's 54-hole format, which is written as "LIV" in roman numerals.

LIV Golf History

Originally, the Premier Golf League was announced in 2019 as a new golf tour. A financial collaboration was discussed between the Premier Golf League and Saudi investors; however, in 2020, Golf Saudi, a branch of the Public Investment Fund, provided funding to a new organization with a similar proposal for a golf league. As a result, the former came into existence in 2021 as "LIV Golf Investements" with Greg Norman as the CEO, and the league began its debut season in 2022.

The initial reaction from the PGA Tour, upon the announcement of the new rival league, led to several barrings, suspension and fines for the golfers who chose to play for the league, citing "conflicting events without the Tour's permission." Golf Monthly reported in June 2022 that of the 48 golfers who participated in the LIV Golf Invitational Series, a debut event, 17 golfers were suspended by the PGA Tour, including Sergio Garcia, Talor Gooch, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Kevin Na, Ian Poulter, and Louis Oosthuizen, among others.

Finally, in mid-2023, after a ton of controversies, legal disputes and counterclaims, the PGA Tour, PGA European Tour and LIV Golf announced a commercial merger into a single Saudi-backed, for-profit organization. The agreement resolved any then-existing legal issues and introduced a structured process for players seeking to reapply for membership. The PGA Tour will have a majority on the board, with Yasir Al-Rumayyan serving as chairman and Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour commissioner, as CEO.

LIV Golf 2025 Schedule

The 2025 season of LIV Golf will begin on February 6–8 at the Riyadh Golf Club in Saudi Arabia and conclude on August 22–24 with the Team Championship held at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort in Michigan. Golf News Net reports that the first 13 of the 14 events feature individual payouts of $20 million, while the team purse is $5 million. Interestingly, the purse for the 14th season-ending team championship event is $50 million.

LIV Golf Broadcasting Details

LIV Golf has a broadcasting agreement with DAZN since mid-2022 and The CW since January 2023. In January 2025, a multi-year media rights deal was signed between Fox Sports and LIV Golf for live coverage of LIV Golf League competitions across the United States.

The Saudi-backed tour also signed for the international broadcast in Germany, Austria, Italy, Latin America, and Canada; several other agreements were signed by ServusTV, Eleven Sports, Claro Sports, GameTV, and CHCH-TV, respectively.
