Louis Oosthuizen’s Early Life and Background

Louis Oosthuizen, a well-known South African professional golfer, was born in Mossel Bay, South Africa, on 19th October 1982 to his father Piet Oosthuizen & mother Minnie Oosthuizen. His full name is Lodewicus Theodorus Louis Oosthuizen and also holds the nickname of "Shrek". His education details are not well documented but it is reported that he grew up on a farm in Gourits River. Early on, his family struggled to pay for his golf equipment and accessories but later got financial support from the Ernie Els Golf Foundation for almost 3 years which helped him to establish himself as a professional golfer in future.

Louis Oosthuizen’s Amateur Golf Career

Having an amazing amateur career in golf, Oosthuizen secured his victory at the World Junior Championship in 2000. After that, he also won the All African Games in Kenya in the year 2001. In the same year, he also won the Transvaal Amateur Stroke Play Championship in South Africa and the Southern Cape Open. In 2002, Oosthuizen won at the Natal Open Stroke Play Championship in South Africa and the Irish Amateur Open Championship.

After becoming a pro in 2002 at the age of 19, Oosthuizen won several tournaments like the Open da Andalucia de Golf, South African Open, Volvo Golf Champions, Africa Open, Platinum Classic & so on. During his professional career, Oosthuizen played on the European Tour, Sunshine Tour, Asian Tour, and PGA Tour and currently plays in LIV Golf. He gained success on each tour and won a total of 14 times.

Oosthuizen has won 9 times on the European Tour and 8 times on the Sunshine Tour. Oosthuizen also played very well in the major championships and secured victory in The Open Championship 2010. Additionally, he reached his peak on 13th January 2013 with 4th rank in the Official World Golf Ranking.

As an amateur golfer, Oosthuizen competed on provincial & national levels and won numerous titles. He won the All African Games in Kenya, the Transvaal Amateur Stroke Play Championship in South Africa and the Southern Cape Open in the year 2001. In 2002, Louis won the Natal Open Stroke Play Championship in South Africa and the Irish Amateur Open Championship.

After becoming a pro in 2002 at the age of 19, Louis started playing on the Sunshine Tour and European Tour. In 2003 Oosthuizen competed on the European Challenge Tour and has been a member of the European Tour since 2004. He participated in the Race of Dubai in 2009 and tied for 31th position. Later in 2010, with his impressive playing style, Oosthuizen won The Open Championship which is considered his greatest achievement in the major championships. After 2010, he won the Africa Open playoff and earned his European Tour title for the 3rd time.

In 2012, Louis finished second in the Masters Tournament. In April 2012, he won at the Maybank Malaysia Open by 3 strokes which was his fifth victory on the European Tour. In the following year, Oosthuizen became one of the top 10 golfers for the first time in the Official World Golf Ranking. Overall he won a total of 9 tournaments on the European Tour and 8 tournaments on the Sunshine Tour. He finished second at the PGA Championship twice in 2017 & 2021. In July 2021, Louis Oosthuizen finished third in the Open Championship (2021) at Royal St George's Golf Club. Oosthuizen joined the LIV Golf in 2022 after resigning from the PGA Tour.
