Memphis Grizzlies forward GG Jackson II has suffered an unfortunate injury while playing basketball during the offseason. The Athletic's Shams Charania reported that Jackson broke his right foot and will require surgery. However, no timetable for his return has been reported.
According to Charania's report, the injury happened on Aug. 27 outside of Dallas. The forward attempted to make a layup but it was contested. The Grizzlies' medical report stated that he had an awkward landing, which caused him to break his right foot. After medical tests, it was found that a broken fifth metatarsal was the main cause of his injury.
The medical staff shared that the forward is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Jackson is coming off a stellar rookie season for the Grizzlies. He appeared in 48 games, averaging 14.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists. The 6-foot-9 forward shot 42.8% from the field and 35.7% beyond the arc. He was named part of the All-Rookie Second Team.
He's among the few rookies who scored 40+ points in a single game. Back in April 2024, Jackson finished with 44 points, 12 rebounds and two steals. The former South Carolina forward also scored 30+ points three times during his first season in the NBA.
With his recent injury, it's likely the Grizzlies won't have him for their training camp, which is set to start on Sept. 25.
How does GG Jackson II's injury affect the team?
Last season, the Grizzlies dealt with a significant amount of injuries to their team, with the likes of Ja Morant, Marcus Smart, and Brandon Clarke missing most of the year. The upcoming season hasn't even started, but they've already been dealt an injury to one of their key players. But the team is lucky that it'll have some of its more experienced players back next season.
GG Jackson II had the chance to show his talent on the court because of injuries to some veteran players. He got additional minutes amid Clark's absence, which helped him start his career on a high note. But Clarke is back from his Achilles injury and will likely take a significant chunk of Jackson's minutes.
Jackson's potential absence would affect the team's depth, but the return of Morant, Smart and others should help the team overcome his loss.
