Spain holds the No. 2 rank in the FIBA rankings as of July 2024. They won the last FIBA World Cup in 2019, where they defeated Argentina in the final. The win was Spain’s second FIBA trophy, with the first coming in 2006. Coach Sergio Scariolo is ready with his 12-man roster, and the motivation in the dressing room will be high after they won the 2022 EuroBasket.
Ancillary MVP players like Juancho Hernangomez and Willy Hernangomez will be highlighting Spain's roster and are the leading scorers for the team. The Summer Olympics 2024 will be held in France between July 26th and August 11th. Spain is in Group A and will compete with teams like Australia, Canada and Greece.
History
Team Spain has a rich basketball history among all the European nations. Spain qualified for the first Summer Olympics in 1936 when basketball was added for the first time, but as the Spanish Civil War began, the team was unable to show its full potential. The first deep run for the team came at the 1984 Olympics, where they made it to the final. Unfortunately for them, they lost to the USA in a close match.
They played the USA again in the final at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. However, the result was the same and Spain had to settle for a silver medal.
