The Texas A&M Aggies are one win away from College World Series glory. On Friday night, they defeated the Tennessee Volunteers 9-5.
At the top of the 5th, they held a commanding 7-2 lead, which they didn't let go. The Vols attempted to rally in the bottom of the 7th, but after three runs on their part, the score was set to the final 9-5.
Much has to go to Aggies starter Ryan Prager, who despite not giving a quality start, did provide a solid four innings from the mound. Prager allowed two hits for two earned runs and struck out six batters.
He crucially gave up no walks. His ERA stands at a solid 2.95. However, the true hero was Evan Aschenbeck, who shut any Volunteer attempt at a rally with two innings in which he allowed only two hits and struck out seven batters.
Game 2 of the College World Series finals starts at 2:00 p.m. ET at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. The game will air on ESPN. The announcing crew will have Karl Ravech (play-by-play), Kyle Peterson (color commentary), Chris Burke (color commentary), and Kris Budden (sideline reporting).
Jim Schlossnagle praises his pitching staff but reminds Aggies the task is not yet done
The Aggies head coach, Jim Schlossnagle, spoke with the press in the aftermath of Saturday's victory. He seemed pleased by what he saw, but reminded everyone there's still a series to win:
“Great ball game, certainly I thought we really played well for the most part, we got timely hits. Had some really good at-bats against some really good pitchers. Tennessee has got a great, diverse pitching staff.
"I thought Prager threw some things, Stewie was awesome, Evan was Evan and Kaeden Kent just continues to play outstanding the back half of the season. It’s one win, we can’t make it anything more than that. Still got a ball game and a series to win, just like the regular season.”
