Has there ever been a Grand Slam in the College World Series? Taking a look at scoring four runs in CWS

Florida's Brody Donay hit a grand slam in a College World Series game against Kentucky on June 19.

Hitting a grand slam is the most exciting move that a batter can execute in a baseball game. It means the hitter scored a home run with three runners on base, thus helping his team score four runs to their account in just one hit.

A grand slam can turn the game in one team's favor. It can give the hitting team a big win if they are behind on the bottom of the ninth. It can also change the tempo of the game if it's hit in the middle of the game.

The College World Series is no stranger to such exciting moments. There have been 52 grand slams hit in CWS history. The last such instance was Brody Donay's moonshot at the bottom of the first inning that handed the Florida Gators a 7-1 lead in its second-round, win-or-go-home game against the Kentucky Wildcats last Wednesday.

The grand slam pushed Florida to a 15-4 win in the CWS, moving the Gators to a semifinal match against the Texas A&M Aggies later in the night. Although Florida didn't make the Finals, losing 6-0 to Texas A&M in the semifinals, the grand slam will be remembered in the annals of college baseball.

Kal Segrist hits first CWS grand slam and other interesting facts

The first-ever grand slam in CWS history came in 1950. Texas infielder Kal Segrist smacked a deep shot in the bottom of the third inning to spark a 12-1 Longhorns win against Washington State. The feat was a key moment in Texas' national championship conquest that season.

Five years later, Western Michigan catcher Freed Messner blasted a pinch-hit grand slam at the top of the eighth inning against Wake Forest. Although Messner's moonshot failed to carry WMU to victory over the Demon Deacons, it was the only pinch-hit grand slam in CWS history.

The record for most grand slams in a season was in 1998 with four. This includes the national championship clash between Arizona State and USC. Both teams traded grand slams at each other but in the end, USC emerged victorious in a high-scoring game, 21-14.

Before Donay's grand slam, Florida's Ty Evans crushed the ball with three runners on base in Game 2 of the 2023 Men's College World Series. The homer had an exit velocity of 109 miles per hour and a launch angle of 51.2 degrees. It helped the Gators tie the series with LSU as they won, 24-4.

A year earlier, Oklahoma's Jackson Nicklaus slammed a first-pitch grand slam at the top of the fourth inning to end a four-year College World Series grand slam drought. This was the third grand slam at the Charles Schwab Field Omaha and enabled the Sooners to take a 12-3 advantage.

Grand slams are rare in a baseball game as it takes the right timing and an accurate batter to accomplish such a feat. Fans will expect one more instance gets added in the CWS championship game between Tennessee and Texas A&M, which begins on June 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
