The North Carolina Tar Heels will begin their 2024 College World Series campaign on Friday by squaring off against the Virginia Cavaliers. The opening game of this year's CWS will commence at 2 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.

North Carolina's starting pitcher today

Jason DeCaro will start as North Carolina's pitcher against Virginia on Friday, the Tar Heels confirmed earlier this week. Ahead of North Carolina's opening game of the CWS, DeCaro spoke about his teammates' effect on him in his freshman year.

“I think the great leadership that we have from the other guys played a huge role,” DeCaro said to the media. “Whether it’s on the field or off the field, they’re always there to give you advice or help you out if you need it. I think that’s been really big from day one. Just kind of having them by our side and if you have any questions, you can ask them. So that’s been huge.”

DeCaro also expressed his gratitude to UNC for the opportunity it has given him this season.

“It’s a privilege that we get to be here and experience all this. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Never going to forget this. So just taking it all in and kind of just enjoying it.”

DeCaro is enjoying a fine season with North Carolina and has a 6-1 record heading into the final stretch of the NCAA tournament. The right-hander has racked up 72 strikeouts and 40 walks across 85.2 innings pitched with a 3.89 ERA. Now, it will be interesting to see how he fares against Virginia on the biggest stage in college baseball.

The clash between the No. 4 seed North Carolina (47-14) vs No. 12 seed Virginia (46-15) will be broadcast live on ESPN. Fans can also livestream the College World Series matchup on ESPN+ and Fubo.

The Cavaliers beat Kansas State in two games of their Charlottesville Regional to reach the College World Series. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels took down West Virginia in the Chapel Hill Super Regional to punch a ticket to Omaha.
