The North Carolina Tar Heels will play the Tennessee Volunteers in their second game of the 2024 College World Series on Saturday. The winners' bracket matchup will commence at 7 p.m. EDT at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.
North Carolina starting pitcher today
Shea Sprague will start as North Carolina's pitcher against Tennessee on Sunday, the Tar Heels announced before the game. The junior has a 3-1 record this season.
Sprague has racked up 64 strikeouts and 16 walks across 74.1 innings pitched at a 4.00 ERA. He has become an important member of the Tar Heels' rotation and needs to be at the top of his game on Sunday.
Ahead of the clash against Tennessee, Tar Heels coach Scott Forbes offered high praise for his opponents but insisted that his team can match the top-ranked program in the country. He also gave his thoughts on Sprague starting against the Vols.
"I'm excited for our guys to play Tennessee. And we have a really good club too. Two really good clubs going to be at it tomorrow night," Forbes said.
"Shea, I think matches up good with anybody. He's competitive, obviously, he can throw his fastball to both sides of the plate. The change-up makes the fastball play up and Coach Gaines and Coach Howell have done a really good job with him with the slider," Forbes added.
