The Apple Cup is one of the most popular rivalries in college football in the United States. The two teams in this rivalry are the Washington Huskies of the University of Washington and the Washington State Cougars of Washington State University. These two teams are a part of NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). However, the Washington Huskies are a member of the Big Ten Conference while the Washington State Cougars are a member of the Pac-12 Conference.

These two teams have faced off against one another 116 times, as of 2024. The target of these two teams while competing is the Apple Cup trophy that was introduced in 1963. The first meeting of the two teams in 1900 saw a tie with a score of 5-5 while the most recent game in 2024 saw Washington State win the game by defeating Washington 24-19.

What is the rivalry between Washington and Washington State called?

The rivalry between Washington-Washington State is called the Apple Cup, as per College Football Network. The rivalry began in 1900. However, it was only in 1962 that the rivalry between these came to be known as The Apple Cup as per #Go Cougs. From 1963 onwards, the Washington Apple Commission have presented the trophy to the winners of the rivalry every year. Washington was the first team to win the trophy in 1963, while Washington State won the trophy for the first time in 1967. This trophy is also symbolic of the fact that Washington was the largest produder of apples in the United States as per USA Today. The Apple Cup is notably awarded by Washington's Governor to the winners of the trophy every year.

Althoughy their first meeting in 1900 was a tie, the Washington State (then called Washington Agricultural) earned the first victory on November 1, 1901. However, Washington bounced back from their loss the previous year and earned their first victory in 1902. Washington also leads the rivalry with a record of 76-34-6, as of 2024.
