Ward began his college career at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. He joined the Cardinals as a freshman in 2020 and made an immediate impact. In a season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic, he threw for 2,260 yards and 24 touchdowns in just six games, leading the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in touchdown passes. His outstanding performance earned him the Jerry Rice Award as the most outstanding freshman in FCS football. On January 10, 2022, Ward transferred to Washington State University to compete at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level. He quickly became the starting quarterback and had a successful first season in 2022, completing 64.4% of his passes for 3,231 yards with 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
