The quarterback for the Houston Cougars, Donovan Smith, was born on October 27, 2001. Prior to the Cougars, he played for Texas Tech . He was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. His father is DeAndre Smith was a footballer, having played in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts.
DeAndre is currently a Football coach, and he also coached Wide Receivers at Texas Tech Raiders during his son's time there as a Quarterback. Also known as Smitty and Donny, Donovan's brother Ryan Smith was also a college footballer, having played as a wide receiver for Duke in the Mid-2010s.

Donovan Smith attended Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. He mostly played wide receiver and also served as the team's backup quarterback. Before the 2019–20 academic year, Donovan would transfer to Frenship High School in the Wolfforth, Texas, suburb of Lubbock. In addition to 489 running yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, Smith completed 212 of 328 passes for 3,114 yards with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions to cap off his senior season. In the state of Texas for the 2019 season, Smith had the 32nd-most passing yards at the end of his senior year.
After high school, Smith was rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports.com. He chose Texas Tech over Utah State, San Diego State, and Nevada.

Donovan Smith College Career
Donovan Smith has played for the Houston Cougars and previously for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Smith did not play in any games in 2020 due to a shoulder injury that he sustained before the season. After undergoing shoulder surgery, he resumed practicing in the spring. In the second quarter of the team's Week Nine matchup with Oklahoma, Smith replaced starter Henry Colombi, who had been shaken up by a tackle.
In the team's Week 11 game against Iowa State, Smith started for the first time as a college student. Tyler, the intended starter, was still recovering from a fractured collarbone he sustained in week 4, and Colombi was out due to illness. The Red Raiders (Texas Tech) won 41-38 and, for the first time since 2017, Smith completed the game 25-of-32 for 322 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Smith won the title of Big 12 Newcomer of the Week in recognition of his performance.
In 2022, Smith had three interceptions, including one returned 54 yards for a score. The Cougars tied the game after the Red Raiders took a 17-3 lead. Smith scored the game-winning touchdown in double overtime, leveling the score at 20-20. He won the Earl Campbell-Tyler Rose Award for National Player of the Week for his performance against Texas. Smith moved to Houston on December 21, 2022. In the 2023 regular season, Donovon Smith, the quarterback, had a strong performance with 256 completions, 2,801 passing yards, and 22 touchdowns. He had to deal with 26 sacks and 13 interceptions, but he still had a strong passer rating of 135.5. In 138 rush attempts, Smith gained 428 yards and six touchdowns.
